My Mother is Missing [Feb. 24th, 2008|08:08 pm]
Tavisha=^..^=

I really thought she would be found by now. But Since Thurs. Feb. 21, 2008 my mother, Dyane (Dee) Blackford has been missing from her retirement home in Glendale, CA. The reason I'm making an open post for her like this is obvious that I am very concerned and worried about her welfare after 4 days of no leads. The police have been notified since the day of disappearance and we have called every hospital including psych wards and ERs, etc. in the immediate area of Glendale and LA county. Still nothing. What makes us anxious is this; since 2003 my mother's mental health has steadily declined due to a stroke or perhaps a brain haemorrhage we believe she had suffered, but was never properly treated for it in time. As a result, she has dementia brought on by aphasia. The aphasia is caused by atrophy of the brain which was diagnosed from a MRI scan back in 2003. What this means is, she cannot speak or read clearly without assistance anymore. Some days have been better than others for her, but sadly most of the time she cannot speak a full two words and her sentences become gibberish. However, by sight, she still recognizes family and friends, even some places~ but she just wouldn't know how to explain how to get there. She knows how to say hi, bye, yes, no, and if she's hungry she'll rub her stomach. She is in general very friendly. At a glance, she looks very healthy and normal and still walks briskly for her age.
The days here have been colder and rainier than usual and I doubt she was dressed warmly. After going through her wardrobe, I didn't find her coats missing. I can only hope she has found a hot meal and shelter by a good Samaritan at this point. However, there is of course a multitude of scenarios that can occur within 4 days, so I urge anyone out there in our area, in CA, or perhaps even as far as Az, Utah, WA, Canada, Mexico, heck across the entire Nation, to please let us or your local authorities know if you've seen or heard anything that might relate to my mom. I am her only child, I have no other siblings to ask for help with this. Which is why I'll be turning to as many media outlets as possible in hope for a safe, quick return of my mother.

I can't thank all of you enough for taking the time to read this. I hope we can find her asap! Positive thinking everyone.

I am so sorry to hear about this. I don't even know you personally, but I feel awful to think of the feelings you have when someone close to you is missing. I will be praying for you all.

Y'all are in my most fervent thoughts and prayers at this time. If there were a way from me to drop everything and fly out there and help search, I would. But I just can't. So know that you are to call on my for anything - be it getting the word out here or contributing to a reward fund. I hope that she is found before then, but next Sunday I could come out for a few days to help search if you like. But I pray she is safely at home by then.

Of course, I live nowhere near California, but I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry to hear this, and I hope that you're both able to take care of yourselves while this obviously terrifying situation is happening, and I hope that your mother is found safe and sound soon.

Tavisha, I'm so sorry to hear this! I've reposted part of your post with the photo on my blog (which is getting some heavy traffic right now, so I hope that will be helpful) and my livejournal, and forwarded it to a few other bloggers I'm friendly with, hoping that they'll pick up the story and someone somewhere will see this. I hope you do not mind that I've reposted her photo on my blog!

Both of my grandparents have varying degrees of degenerative neurological disorders and have wandered off before. We've been lucky in that they still have high cognitive functioning and we've found them talking with people on the street within a few hours of their disappearance, but it terrifies me that something like this could happen to my own family.

Good lord, I hope she's okay!

I often wind up helping some elderly people near the hospitals I go to to find their way back to their families. Sometimes they went off looking for something to eat or thought they saw someone they knew and then became distracted. One time someone was trying to get an elderly Korean woman into a car to take her to a church where he thought "her own kind" could better help her.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Have you tried the local news and media? Radio stations? Women/Homeless shelters? YMCA? Churches? Masons? Eastern Star? Elks? Knights of Columbus? Rotary Club? There are numerous social groups and clubs willing to help in these situations.

I suggest getting a lawyer who deals in nursing home abuse, as well. People shouldn't just disappear from those places!

I do hope they find her soon.

When she is safe and sound back in her retirement home, you might want to find out if her doctors have her on potassium. Someone close to me recently had to take her mother (who also suffers from dementia) off her high-dose potassium and on a lower dose one because when combined with demensia, too much potassium can cause hallucinations and paranoia. If this was the case with her she may have run off on her own because of the side effects of it.

Like you said, think positive. Someone will find her and see somewhere she is missed and needs to be returned home post haste.

Re: SHE's FOUND!

My son has disappeared a couple of times. He's autistic, and we were worried sick because he is vulnerable like your mom.
So your worry hit close to home, but I also know what relief you must be feeling, and it makes me so happy.
I hope she checks out okay, and doesn't give you a scare like this again.
